Transparency and accountability require robust financial information.
Governments around the world are entrusted by their citizens to manage their financial resources in a sensible and cost-effective way. They collect revenues, largely through taxation, and in return are expected to deliver a wide range of public services such as education, health, infrastructure and social transfers for the benefit of current and future generations.
Accountability. Now. is an initiative for higher standards of public sector information around the world. It challenges governments to recognize the importance of working toward financial reporting that meets international standards known as IPSAS®.
It starts with equipping governments with the foundation for good financial management: transparent, accountable financial information that:
- Captures the entire picture of funding commitments, now and in the future;
- Facilitates wise spending;
- Strengthens economies; and, most importantly,
- Builds trust with their citizens (Click here to spread the message and help #BuildTrust.)
Better quality financial information and increased transparency won’t solve all the challenges of governing, but they will greatly assist governments’ decision making, performance, and accountability to their citizens.
The coalition partners’ goal is to support governments around the world in making better decisions and becoming more transparent and accountable. Enhanced public financial accounting and reporting is essential to address the problems highlighted by global economic and fiscal crises. It informs government policy and helps to make public services—and economies—more sustainable and resilient over the long term.
All citizens should care how governments budget and account for their spending. Bad financial information means services suffer and public servants can’t be properly held to account. By adding your voice to ours, we can encourage governments around the world to enhance their financial reporting for the benefit of their citizens.
