The PAO Development Committee and the MOSAIC (Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen Accountancy and Improve Cooperation) Steering Committee will meet in Beijing, China, October 15-17, 2013. The IFAC Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) Committee will also meet in Beijing, October 17-18, and host a PAIB forum on October 16.
The May 2013 PAO Development Committee meeting was held on May 12-13, 2013 in Accra, Ghana, immediately preceding the Second African Congress of Accountants, Africa’s Economic Growth, Accountability and Democracy. While in Ghana, the PAO Development Committee also held a workshop on the IFAC Statements of Membership Obligations (SMOs) that brought together committee members and representatives of the PAOs that make up PAFA’s membership, including Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Nigeria, and Uganda. IFAC staff provided an overview of the SMOs and highlighted the key revisions made in 2012. Group discussion sessions followed, allowing participants to exchange perspectives and highlight their current priorities and challenges in one of three key SMO areas: adoption and implementation of international standards, quality assurance, or investigation discipline processes.
Asia and Pacific Region
IFAC’s Compliance Advisory Panel (CAP) meeting was held in Bangkok, Thailand, April 8-9, adjacent to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Federation of Accountants Council meeting. The scheduling allowed both AFA and the Thai Federation of Accounting Professions, and IFAC member, to present to the CAP. Additionally, a joint workshop session focused on the revised Statements of Membership Obligations (SMOs) and the SMO Action Planning process was also held, allowing AFA member bodies to share ideas and discuss their own approaches to addressing the SMOs. While in the region, IFAC staff also took the opportunity to hold individual meetings with existing and potential member bodies from across the region and, following the meeting, traveled to the Philippines to conduct a seminar hosted by the Philippine Institute for Certified Public Accountants.
