Since 2001, first as National Director of Professional Standards and then as National Managing Partner, Quality, Mr. Thomson's responsibilities have included independence and other ethics at Grant Thornton in Canada. From 1988 to 2001, he was as an Audit Partner and Regional Director of Professional Standards.

Mr. Thomson is a past Chair and member of Canada's Auditing and Assurance Standards Board. He also served on the Public Company Forum Committee that facilitated the establishment of the Canadian Public Accountability Board. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Mr. Thomson is also a member of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants in January 2010. He was nominated by the Transnational Auditors Committee.
