Gary Scopes became a member of the Professional Accountancy Organization (PAO) Developing Committee in January 2008. He was nominated by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Mr. Scopes previously served as a techical advisor with the IFAC Board.
Mr. Scopes served as director of international relations for the AICPA for six years prior to retiring in 2011. Mr. Scopes previously represented the AICPA to the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants and served on the Board of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean.
Mr. Scopes has over 38 years of experience in the regulation of the accounting and auditing profession nationally and internationally, including as executive director of the Society of Louisiana CPAs, the Texas Society of CPAs, and the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). While with the IMA, he served as a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Committee of the Financial Accounting Standards Board and participated in the development of internal control guidelines by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO).
Mr. Scopes has also worked as an international consultant for the Asian Development Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the US Agency for International Development where he assisted governments and organizations on the development of the accounting and auditing profession and strategic planning, ethics and standards enforcement, and corporate governance. He has helped several PAOs join IFAC and implement international standards for International Financial Reporting Standards, ethics, auditing, and education.
Mr. Scopes is a Certified Association Executive and graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor's degree in rhetoric/debate. In addition to his professional experience, Mr. Scopes has written articles for global publications and presented lectures at numerous universities and international forums on association management, ethics, and corporate governance.
