John Wiersema

John Wiersema, FCA, was appointed to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board in January 2013. He was nominated by Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Mr. Wiersema retired in November 2011 following a successful career spanning more than 33 years of public service with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. He was appointed interim auditor general of Canada, a position which he held from May to November 2011. Prior to his appointment, he was the deputy auditor general from 2004 to 2011, providing representation and strategic support for the auditor general. His work involved all areas of the auditor general's mandate.
Mr. Wiersema was actively involved in the standard-setting work of the CICA. He served on many task forces and was a member of the Auditing and Assurance Standards Board from 1999 to 2003. He joined the Public Sector Accounting Board in 2005 and chaired the Board from 2009 to 2011. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of CCAF-FCVI Inc. until his retirement.
Mr. Wiersema has a bachelor of commerce (honours) degree from Carleton University (US), became a chartered accountant in 1981, and was elected a Fellow in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 2003.
