Major General (retired) Sebastian Owuama became a member of the IFAC Board in November 2013 after being nominated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Major General Owuama has over 40 years of experience in various public service accountancy fields, including audit and investigations, budget, budget control and monitoring, public finance management, accountancy education, for the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigerian police force, and the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He served in the Nigerian Army for more than three decades, rising to the rank of a major general before retiring from service. A highly decorated officer, he received many medals and honors as commander of the Nigerian Army Finance Corps and contributed to manpower development and capacity building for the Nigerian Armed Forces and Nigerian police force in accountancy training and certification of their personnel.
Major General Owuama is a past president of ICAN, the Association of Accountancy Bodies of West Africa, and the Pan African Federation of Accountants. He served as a member of the Governing Council of ICAN for 15 years prior to his election as president and has served on most ICAN committees during his career.
Major General Owuama graduated from the University of Nigeria Nsukka with an honors degree in accountancy and has professional qualifications from the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants, Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, and ICAN. He is an alumnus of the London Business School.
