Chris Austin Appointed Chair of the International Accounting Education Standards Board
The International Accounting Education Standards Board™ (IAESB™) is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Austin as its chair for a three-year term commencing January 1, 2015.
Mr. Austin’s appointment has been approved by the Public Interest Oversight Board.
Nominated to the IAESB by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, Mr. Austin has served as one of its public members since January 2011. During this service, he has represented the Education Board in various outreach activities and has made significant contributions to a number of standard-setting and related initiatives. In particular, he worked on projects to develop standards on entry requirements to professional accounting education programs and on professional skills for aspiring professional accountants.
As chair, Mr. Austin will lead the IAESB in carrying out its strategy and implementing its work program as identified in the recently published 2014-2016 IAESB Strategy and Work Plan, which includes completing critical work in standard-setting, promoting awareness of the Education Board’s pronouncements, and supporting effective implementation of the clarified International Education Standards™ (IESs™).
“Enhancing the quality and relevance of professional education to current and anticipated challenges will strengthen the worldwide accountancy profession and sustain the public’s confidence in it. This is an exciting time for the IAESB, and it has important work to do to ensure the full benefits of the revised IESs are realized,” said Mr. Austin. “I look forward to working with the members of the IAESB, the IAESB Consultative Advisory Group, and other stakeholders towards this important goal.”
Throughout his professional career, he has held senior positions within the government of the United Kingdom, both within Britain and around the world. Among other roles he has served as Country Director for DFID (The UK Department for International Development) in Bangladesh and has worked in the UK’s Cabinet Office (on G8 transparency), the UK’s Finance Ministry, and the Executive Director's Office at the World Bank/International Monetary Fund.
Commenting on Mr. Austin’s appointment, current IAESB Chair Peter Wolnizer said, “With Chris as incoming chair, I know the IAESB—and the public interest—will continue to be well-served. He is an experienced leader and brings an energetic and collaborative approach that is well-suited to meeting the challenges facing the IAESB and the global accountancy profession and capitalizing on the opportunities for continued improvement.”
