Background

The goal of accounting education is to produce competent professional accountants who are capable of making a positive contribution over their lifetimes to the profession and society in which they work. This paper, IEP 2, Towards Competent Professional Accountants, draws the different methodologies to competence adopted around the world and offers guidance on how member bodies can take a competence-based approach to determining their qualification requirements.

The knowledge needed to function effectively as a professional accountant in all sectors continues to expand and change at a rapid rate. Professional accountants face increased knowledge and skill expectations. Continued development of professional competence and lifelong learning are critical if the professional accountant is to meet these expectations.

Background

This project has developed guidance to assist IFAC member bodies comply with the requirements of International Education Standard 5, Practical Experience Requirements. The new practice statement assists IFAC members by providing guidance regarding the period of practical experience and monitoring and control of trainees during the period of practical experience.

07-10-04: Guidance on Information Technology for Professional Accountants - Completed

Background

This project has developed guidance to assist IFAC member bodies to identify the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare professional accountants to perform competently in the IT environment. The new practice statement identifies the competency elements that IFAC member bodies can include in the IT knowledge component of prequalification professional accounting education programs.

Background

The purpose of this project was to develop guidance to assist and encourage IFAC member bodies, academics and others responsible for the education of professional accountants to adopt a range of appropriate approaches to develop professional values and ethics as part of the education of all professional accountants. The new practice statement identifies a number of methods for the delivery of ethics education, stressing the importance of workplace learning and assessment.

Assessment Methods - Completed

Background

The purpose of this project was to provide guidance to assist and encourage member bodies of IFAC to select a range of appropriate assessment methods to better test the capabilities and competencies of candidates for admission to the profession. The IAESB (formerly the Education Committee) commissioned research on this topic by The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland. The research report is available by clicking here.
