Globally in 2024, capital raised from initial public offerings (IPOs) totaled USD 121 billion from 1,215 deals, according to EY’s Global IPO Trends 2024 report. The report, which analyses the IPO market by country and region, predicted increased activity in 2025 – a forecast that is holding true despite significant market disruptions, with a 20% year-over-year growth by value in Q1 2025.

As IPO markets expand, there is growing demand for financial acumen, governance and control expertise, and strategic insight and advice. This offers valuable opportunities and career paths for professional accountants in business (PAIBs) to have meaningful impact, guiding companies through the complex journey from pre-IPO planning and preparation to post listing governance.

Laura Takamizawa is a Principal in IFAC's thought leadership team, focusing on initiatives in support of finance and accounting professionals working in business and the public sector. She was previously an Audit Manager at Grant Thornton, specializing in public sector audit in the UK, and prior to that worked for the Audit Commission. She also spent a year on secondment to the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), where she was responsible for managing their public sector and business network programs.

Laura is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), and holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Mathematical Physics from the University of Nottingham (UK).
