Intern Spotlight: Madeleine Knopf

What attracted you to IFAC when you joined?

I was drawn to IFAC because I thought it would be interesting to intern somewhere with a global reach. I was curious about what communications and marketing look like on an international level, and I wanted to challenge myself by working somewhere outside of my usual comfort zone. I liked the idea of being part of something bigger and seeing how strategy plays out across different countries and cultures.

What types of projects did you work on?

I worked on several communications initiatives focused on member engagement and digital strategy. I created and scheduled social media materials to simplify accounting topics and promote IFAC thought leadership, produced editorial content for the Knowledge Gateway, reviewed executive speeches, updated web pages, and assisted with cross-functional projects.

What was your most memorable experience?

One of my most memorable experiences was filming a trivia video in Bryant Park. It was a fun and creative way to engage with the public and promote awareness of the accounting profession in a fun, approachable way. It reminded me how impactful simple storytelling can be when you’re trying to humanize a field like accountancy.

What’s the most valuable skill you gained from your internship?

Adaptability. I learned how to take initiative, pivot when needed, and work independently in a fast-paced, professional environment. I also improved my ability to turn complex information into clear, engaging content, which is valuable in any communications role.

What have you learned about the accounting profession that surprised you?

I was surprised by how global and versatile the accounting profession is. I didn’t realize how many doors it opens, such as in areas like sustainability, technology, international development, or public policy. I also learned how important professional organizations like IFAC and IFEA are in shaping global standards and ethics.

What advice do you have for others going into internships?

Be proactive and ask for opportunities. If you want to try something or have an idea, just ask. Some of my favorite parts of the internship came from speaking up and doing things that weren’t originally on my to-do list. Also, talk to people and build connections. You will learn much more than you expect just from causal conversations.
